Celebrei o meu aniversário no Carnaval, em Loulé, Portugal

Recently, I had the opportunity to celebrate both Carnaval and my birthday in the charming town of Loulé, Portugal. I weighed the pros and cons of whether or not to go for a several weeks. On the one hand, here I am in Portugal and I want to explore! On the other hand, it would be a 9-hour bus ride to get there and I wouldn't know anyone there to hang out with. I finally made the decision to get up and go, and I'm so glad I did! It turned out to be a day filled with joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

I got up at 6 am as my taxi was due to arrive at 7. I had spent the evening before figuring out my bus routes and purchasing tickets. My bus departed Oliveira do Hospital at 7:55 am. Along the way I saw a lot of forested and mountainous rural Portugal. I also saw mile after mile of olive trees and solar panels, though not in the same fields, of course. The Tagus River (Rio Tejo) in Lisbon was simply beautiful. After a very long day of travel, I arrived in Loulé at 7:20 that evening. The streets were decorated, but quiet. I wondered where everyone was. After checking in at my hostel, I found an Indian restaurant nearby and made my way there. I had a great dinner and returned to the hostel, ready to get some sleep.

The next morning, the excitement in the air was palpable as locals and visitors alike gathered in the streets, adorned in colorful costumes and masks, ready to immerse themselves in the festive spirit. It was the third and last day of Carnaval. I went out for coffee and pasteis de natas, as well as a sequined mask. By midday, the pretty streets of Loulé were bustling.

The weather was absolutely perfect, with the sun shining brightly and a gentle breeze sweeping through the town. It was as if the universe had conspired to create the ideal setting for a day of celebration and merriment. As I made my way through the lively streets, I couldn't help but be captivated by the energy and enthusiasm of the people around me. The sound of music filled the air, with traditional Portuguese tunes blending harmoniously with the infectious beat of samba and other lively rhythms.

When the parade started at 3:30, I began filming as much as I could, in order to try my hand at putting together a video of the desfile (parade). The music was joyous, and everyone participating and watching seemed to join together in making sure the children in attendance felt included. I didn't understand all of the politically themed floats, though some I did. Futebol (aka soccer) had a strong presence, as did sustainable practices to protect the Earth and its climate. Everyone seemed to be dancing, including me. I couldn't help it! I am not someone who normally enjoys parades, but this felt different. It was a happy day.

After the revelry, I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful woman at the hostel where I was staying. Beatriz and I instantly connected, sharing stories, laughter, and a mutual love for photography and adventure. After spending the day immersed in the vibrant Carnaval celebrations, we decided to continue the festivities by going out for dinner. We settled on a cozy pizzeria, where we indulged in delicious slices of pizza and raised a toast to the beautiful experiences life had brought our way. As the night unfolded, we laughed, shared dreams, and created memories that will forever be etched in our minds. The warmth and hospitality of the Portuguese people added an extra layer of charm to the evening, making it even more unforgettable.

Looking back on that day, I can't help but feel immense gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate my birthday in such a magical place. Loulé, with its vibrant Carnaval festivities and welcoming atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for a day filled with love, laughter, and new connections.

Portugal, with its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted people, has truly won my heart. This birthday celebration in Loulé is just one of the many reasons why I have fallen in love with this beautiful country. As I reminisce about that special day, I can't help but smile. It was a birthday celebration like no other, and I am forever grateful for the memories created in Loulé, Portugal.

My next journey will be to the north of Portugal: Porto, Braga, Guimaraes, and especially, Peneda-Geres National Parque! My new driver's license finally came in the mail, so I can rent a car. Wish me luck!,

Não fazia ideia que o Carnaval era tão divertido! Normalmente não gosto de desfiles, mas este foi pura alegria!

Please excuse the black box around my video. I need to learn more about aspect ration, I think. I'll get better!
